Out of Sir and Bluebell’s frist litter, she was an outstanding puppy, very short, with excellent bones and a beautiful feminine head, so we decided not to sell her but to entrust her to an acquaintance living near us so we might have kept an eye on her. The family assured "Iol", this is the name their children chose for her, would have been home raised and given good food. Unfortunately they didn’t keep their promise and the following year, at Christmas, we took her home for a few days warning our neighbours that they should have changed.
She had been a "Christmas present" for the children but I’m sure we made her the best Christmas present since she never went back.
Adorable Sorcičre has now lived more than sixteen years with us but that only year has left an inerasable trace in her character. In the other place she lived in a shabby courtyard where she had only an old armchiar, when it was sunny she could sunbathe on it or she could try to stand the rain under it. Now she has her bed in our bedroom, a soft cushion in the living room and she’s very jealous of what she considers "her own belongings".
"Iol" is an old schanuzer now, she will be seventeen next October, but hers is still an excellent temper, determined and with that bit of aggressivity any schnauzer should have.
When she was young she passed easily her working test, the CAL 1 and she proved several times to be brave in real situations too. Once we were having dinner in a restaurant and she was lying under our table. My handbag had fallen from the chair and one of the waiters took it up and put it on another chair not far from our table. Iol sprang out and, without touching the waiter, made him understand that she was there to keep guard over us and our things.
"Iol" left us before celebrating her seventeenth birthday. We were so proud of her, of her good health considering her age and had already decided that her birthday present would have been...a lot of food, as much food as she could have! She was the greediest Schnauzer I have ever met, always on a diet, poor thing, because she was quite fatty, and when the other dogs were eating you could see her eyes following every bit they were having, from their bowl up to their mouth and, when they had finished, "Iol", who had always been the first to get her food, reviewed all the bowls hoping that something had been left. She lived her long life quietely, without bothering anyone, always next to us...she died "without bothering", as she was used to, but alone...I can't stand it!
